Drake Passage planning
The Drake Passage is part of most ship-based Antarctica expeditions from Ushuaia. It can be calm, rough or somewhere between—and no forecast or ship can guarantee the experience in advance.
The short answer
Most travelers should treat the Drake as two expedition days rather than a hurdle: prepare for motion, follow the crew's advice and use the time for briefings, lectures, seabird watching and settling into the ship.
A crossing commonly occupies roughly two days in each direction, but the actual timing depends on the ship, route, weather and sea state. Expedition programs remain flexible throughout.
Both phrases describe possible conditions, not promises. Wind and swell can change quickly. A calm outbound crossing does not guarantee the same conditions on the return.

Hull design, stabilizers, cabin position and size may influence comfort, but no vessel removes ocean motion. Compare landing operations, expedition staff, itinerary and onboard facilities as well as stability claims.
Fly-cruise programs replace one or both Drake crossings with a flight between southern Chile and the Antarctic Peninsula. They reduce sea days but add different weather, baggage and flight-contingency considerations.
